This term at Brock I am further
exploring the idea of the educational blogging in a new course. We will be
taking a close look at 21st century literacies: domains of knowledge
that are valuable in today’s society that our students must acquire to be
successful in our world. I have decided to continue on with my theme of personalized
blog entries but I hope to make my personal connections more meaningful than
simply identifying or not identifying with a particular experience or method of
teaching and assessment. I hope to use this blog to make meaningful reflections
on who I aim to be as an educator and how I feel is the best ways to educate my
students. My focus for this term will be on my personal growth and understanding of pedagogy in the 21st century!
I am interested in learning about all the different types of 21st literacies that are being integrated into curriculum currently. It has been said many times in education based courses I’ve taken thus far in my studies at Brock that the goal of our educational system to prepare students to be fully capable and functioning participants in the community. When discussing this we are hoping our students will be able to be prepared to be integrated into the local community they inhabit, but also the global community. I think a focus on the global community is so important in North America where we are all very individualist in nature. Being able to understand and be a part of the global community is important because with our current and developing technologies we are all interconnected and rely on each other to a greater extent than we ever have before. Therefore our students need to be prepared to participate in this society we find ourselves in today.

One particular form of 21st century literacy that has my attention currently is environmental literacy. By environmental literacy we are referencing our biophysical environment. This particular form of literacy fits into the theme I was just discussing about connecting North Americans to the global community. I think that now is a great time to be going full force with implementing environmental education into curriculum with the aim of making students environmentally literate. I believe this because we are now finally able to observe and experience the effects that major global issues like global warming is having on our climate and the subsequent consequences of these effects. The lack of observable effects of global warming has always been a huge reason as to why so many people have been able to ignore this crisis and pretend it doesn’t actually exist. The current state of the biophysical environment is the perfect stage upon which the engage students in not just merely content knowledge of their environment, but also giving them a sense of obligation, inspiration, and agency towards their environment and the global community.
This evening I will be participating in a group discussion on environmental literacy and I am excited to learn about what this type of literacy means to my peers and fellow teacher candidates!
