Genius Hour Post #2

Hello Readers!
For my next Genius Hour blog post, I wanted to address some issues and concerns that students must consider when trying to eat healthy and enough food during the school/work day. We all know how difficult it can be to achieve this with our erratic schedules and depleting bank accounts.
My first piece of advice is to avoid buying food at school! We all know that the food sold at school is usually over-priced, and not particularly healthy. As I looked at all the options at Brock for eating on campus, the healthier it was, the more expensive it was! When students are in demanding programs, there is little to no time to work. We have a lot of expenses, so impulse food purchases as school should not make the cut. It takes a little planning and a little bit of investing, but avoiding this can be done!
The most effective way to save money on buying food at school is simple and straight forward, bring food to school with you! This may seem obvious, but sometimes actually doing this is where we fumble. Your first step for success is investing in a good lunch bag, ice pack, thermos, and Tupperware containers! If you can pack food into something that will keep cold what needs to be cold, and keep hot that need to be kept hot, you will have a huge range of foods you can bring to school that will stay safe and ready to eat as long as you need them to. In the long run, this is going to save you a lot of money and time!

One great strategy that I have been using recently is making enough of your dinner at home to have leftovers, and reserve those leftovers as a meal for the following day! My favorite thing to do is make a big slow cooker meal! From this you can leftovers for days to being to school or work for lunch or dinners. I plan to talk more about the benefits of having a slow cooker in your life in my next blog postings, so stay tuned! Another good options for making leftovers is stir-fry’s! There are a ton of different stir-fry’s you can make with a variety of veggies that make for great leftovers. I will be looking into some great recipes to share with you in the coming weeks.

Although this is a great strategy for eating well and saving money as a student while going to school, it is inevitable that for a variety of reasons it just won’t happen! That’s okay, we can’t all be perfect! If this happens, here’s my advice on how to go about eating on campus. Look for the healthier options, that won’t break the bank but will fill you up. You need to use your judgement by thinking about what you need in your diet at that moment, and how long you need to fuel up for, and how cautious of spending money you need to be. There a few healthier options on Brock’s campus in the Market as they make much of their food fresh, but the cost is generally higher. You may also consider visiting the Subway on campus as it is a great middle ground: healthier options and medium cost. If you just need a snack to tide you over, the sushi on campus is a great options. I usually opt for the avocado and cucumber rolls if I just need something to get me through the next class or two.
